Reimagine Africa- China Cooperation

2021 African Ambassadors Dinner Gala & Celebration

On 28 October 2021, Development Reimagined organized the “2021 African Ambassadors Gala Dinner” in Beijing, in celebration of the “2021 African Ambassadors Virtual Retreat” hosted in September 2021. The dinner provided a unique and relaxed platform for African Ambassadors, African leaders and Chinese partners to come together and reflect on the upcoming Forum on China Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) 2021 and review how FOCAC can support poverty reduction efforts in African countries through partnerships and “win-win” cooperation with China.

As co-chair of the 2021 FOCAC, the Embassy of the Republic of Senegal, and the Dean of the African Diplomatic Corps, the Embassy of Cameroon co-hosted the dinner organized by Development Reimagined. Entertainment was provided by an African band “Afrogents”, and all drinks provided at the dinner showcased the best of African products, including South African wine and gin, Tanzania tea and Rwandan coffee.

Over 20 African embassies and ambassadors as well as a number of VIP guests attended the dinner. H.E. Siddharth Chatterjee, United Nations Resident Coordinator to China delivered remarks and expressed his appreciation for Development Reimagined’s dedication and expertise to China- Africa Cooperation. H.E. Wu Peng, Director-General of the Department of African Affairs of MOFA of China attended the dinner virtually with a video message. Other esteemed guests included partners from Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and China-Africa Business Council. During the dinner the ambassadors discussed their expectation on continent’s future cooperation with China, especially on trade and value-addition of agricultural products.

Development Reimagined shared our most recent reports on China-Africa cooperation under the umbrella of FOCAC, which included a summary report of the ambassador retreat held in September, a policy report “Reimaging FOCAC going forwards” and an “Agriculture Deepdive” assessing China-Africa agriculture cooperation under FOCAC. Development Reimagined hope these reports can support Chinese and African policy makers to build positive outcomes in the upcoming FOCAC at the end of November.
