The past two decades have seen significant progress in Africa-China cooperation with the creation of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC). From an early emphasis on political cooperation, Africa-China cooperation under FOCAC has evolved to encompass the economic, sociocultural, peace & security and green development fields.
The 9th edition of FOCAC is to be held this year with great anticipation as it is the first grand in-person meeting of Chinese and African heads-of-state in the post-pandemic era following a lull induced by the disruptions occasioned by COVID-19. With the aim of recapturing the dynamism of Africa-China cooperation, Development Reimagined has authored this report “Africa-China Cooperation in the Post-COVID Era” to contribute to a data-driven understanding of how the Africa-China relationship progressed during the first 18 months (from January 2023 to June 2024) of the post-pandemic era in the lead up to FOCAC 9.
Targeted at stakeholders in the Africa-China cooperation space, and building on our previous work, including the Blueprint for Africa China cooperation published in June 2021, as well as past dialogues and retreats convened and attended by Development Reimagined, the African Union Mission and Representative Office in China, and other key partners and stakeholders, the report details major development and progress made in Africa-China cooperation between January 2023 and June 2024 in the areas listed below (the report draws on a database that Development Reimagined has compiled based on a wide range of public sources).
