Ivory Kairo is the Decolonising Development Programme Manager, bringing a rich blend of legal expertise and diplomatic insight to her role. An Advocate of the High Court of Kenya, Ivory holds a Bachelor of Laws degree from Kenyatta University, Nairobi, a certified mediator and a Master’s degree in International Relations (specializing in Diplomacy and Foreign Policy) from the United States International University – Africa. With extensive experience in Africa’s trade and development policies, Ivory has advised on strategies for more equitable global partnerships. She has also advised various trade partners on the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), helping navigate the complexities of its implementation and ensuring that it fosters inclusive growth for the continent. Additionally, she has provided strategic advice on the application of World Trade Organization (WTO) policies in African contexts, ensuring that global trade frameworks are adapted to benefit local economies. Beyond trade, Ivory’s expertise extends to the emerging and fast-evolving field of technology and artificial intelligence policies in Africa. She has worked with multiple stakeholders to develop forward-thinking strategies that support Africa’s digital economy while safeguarding the continent’s interests. In her advisory roles, she has been a critical advocate for African-led narratives in global development, urging international partners to move away from paternalistic approaches and toward more collaborative, respectful engagements. A staunch supporter of Africa’s agency, Ivory has also been involved in efforts to integrate the African Union (AU) into the G21, marking a significant milestone in the AU. Her work in international diplomacy reflects a commitment to ensuring that Africa’s voice is heard in multilateral forums. Prior to her current position, Ivory honed her legal skills at various law firms in Nairobi, where she worked on matters spanning from consumer protection, corporate law to constitutional law. She also worked with UNICEF Eastern and Southern Africa, contributing to regional efforts to enhance child protection and social policy.
